Understanding Hernias and Surgery

Understanding Hernias and Surgery

What is a hernia?

A hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weakened area of muscle or connective tissue. This commonly presents as a lump or bulge, often in the abdomen or groin, and may become more noticeable when standing, lifting or straining.

While some hernias may initially cause minimal discomfort, they can progress over time and lead to pain or complications if left untreated.

Common types of hernias

Hernias can develop in different areas of the body, and may require assessment or treatment depending on symptoms and severity. If you are considering hernia surgery Gold Coast, understanding the different types of hernia can help guide the most appropriate management. These are the most common types of hernias:

Inguinal hernia

Occurs in the groin and is more common in men.

Umbilical hernia

Develops near the belly button and can affect both adults and children.

Incisional hernia

Forms at the site of a previous surgical incision.

When should a hernia be assessed?

It is important to seek medical advice if you notice:

  • A visible or growing lump in the abdomen or groin
  • Discomfort or pain, particularly when lifting or straining
  • A feeling of pressure or heaviness in the affected area

Early assessment allows for appropriate monitoring and helps determine whether surgical treatment may be required.

Hernia treatment Gold Coast: When is hernia surgery recommended?

Not all hernias require immediate surgery. In some cases, a watchful approach may be appropriate.
Surgery is typically recommended when:

  • Symptoms are persistent or worsening
  • The hernia is increasing in size
  • There is a risk of complications, such as obstruction or strangulation

Hernia surgery aims to repair the weakened area and restore the normal structure of the abdominal wall.

Understanding hernia surgery and recovery

Hernia repair is a common procedure that can often be performed using minimally invasive (laparoscopic) techniques where appropriate. This approach may offer:

  • Smaller incisions
  • Reduced post-operative discomfort
  • Faster return to normal activities

In some cases, open surgery may be recommended depending on the type of hernia and individual factors. The most suitable technique will be discussed during your consultation.

Hernia recovery can vary depending on the procedure and the individual. Most patients experience:

  • Resume light activities within days
  • Gradually return to normal routines over several weeks
  • Experience ongoing improvement as healing progresses

Clear post-operative guidance is provided to support recovery and reduce the risk of recurrence.
