Breast Cancer: Detection, diagnosis and treatment

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Australian women, with over 21,000 cases expected annually. While it mostly affects women over 50, younger women and men (1 in 550) can also be diagnosed. Around 1 in 7 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime.

Finding a Lump

Most breast lumps (about 90%) are benign, but any new lump or change – such as skin dimpling, redness, nipple discharge, or changes – should be checked by a doctor.

Mammograms

A normal mammogram doesn’t rule out future issues. If you notice symptoms, see your doctor regardless of past results. Mammograms are recommended every 2 years for women aged 50–74 and are optional for women aged 40–49 or over 75 without symptoms.

Breast Implants

Women with implants can have mammograms but should inform the clinic beforehand.

Breast Density

Dense breasts contain more glandular and fibrous tissue, making cancer harder to detect on mammograms. About 50% of women over 40 have dense breasts. It can’t be felt—only seen via mammogram.

Family History

While a strong family history (two or more close relatives with breast or ovarian cancer) may increase risk, 95% of cases occur without it.

Diagnosis & Treatment

If cancer is suspected, tests may include a mammogram, ultrasound, MRI, or biopsy. If confirmed, a specialist will guide treatment.

Outlook

Early detection leads to high survival rates—up to 100% for early-stage cancers. Support is available through healthcare providers and organisations like the Cancer Council.
